Years ago, I lost my voice to an injury. That experience taught me something profound: healing doesn’t always begin with sound, sometimes it begins in silence.
When my voice returned, it carried a new awareness. Sound was no longer just something to perform; it became something to inhabit. My voice shifted from expression to connection.
Lately, I’ve been drawn to share one of the simplest, most powerful ways to experience this: humming.
It may seem ordinary, but humming is one of the most accessible healing tools we have. When we hum, we:
A small sound with a profound impact and a reminder that the medicine we seek often exists within.
In yoga, sound is understood as Prana, the universal life force energy. Humming allows us to attune to that energy. Each vibration becomes a bridge, between body and spirit, courage and compassion.
It cultivates Santosha, or contentment: the art of meeting the moment just as it is. Humming teaches us to listen inwardly, soften the mind’s chatter, and rest in the subtle perfection of breath, vibration, and presence.
For me, humming is a simple way to return to myself: to ground, connect, soothe, play, or enter a meditative state.
In my classes and sessions, I often encourage students to hum, not as performance, but as practice. Like all sound, humming is relational: a dance between vibration and stillness, between the inner and outer world, between self and other.
If you’d like to explore this practice, I’ve shared a short guided video on YouTube: Humming Practice
I hope it offers you moments of calm and connection, or a gentle reminder that your voice is medicine.
